Karen Kavaloski
Hello, my name is Karen Kavaloski and I am a LPC in New Mexico, North Carolina and in Missouri. I was originally licensed as a counselor in 2009 while working in Arizona by the State of North Carolina after making a career change from a almost 30 year history in nursing. My passion since I was a young adult was counseling and it took me almost 30 years to achieve my goal of becoming a counselor. I was a Marine wife for almost 30 years and have traveled allot, I have 3 children and 5 grandchildren. My youngest, a son, and one of my grandchildren are severely autistic so I can identify with the stress and struggles some families have with managing special needs within their family. I am also a cancer survivor. I believe we all have an ability to heal the body, mind and soul and I consciously strive daily to be an active participant in my life and support and encourage others to do the same. My education beyond my nursing and counseling includes a Masters in Business Administration and a Doctorate in (Christian) Ministries. I have worked primarily over this past 17 years with trauma and substance abuse in the adult population with about 3 years working with the teenage population in these areas. I also have worked about 5 years total with prison reentry and counseling individuals and families with histories of incarceration in state and federal prison. I believe in working with individuals and families to achieve their highest goals. I believe the client is the expert in his/her own life and I fully encourage one to strive to work towards building a strong foundation within themselves and their families whatever that looks like to them, to that end I use focused solution therapy, internal systems therapy, mindfulness/compassion therapy, cognitive and cognitive behavioral, dialectical therapy, emotional freedom techniques and/or neurolinguistic techniques . I am also the author and publisher self help books under my Sacred Self Workbook Series Outside my therapy practice, I spend my leisure time reading. meditation/praying and gardening. I do light exercise daily.

I am a lifelong student of the healing arts. Currently a Licensed Professional Counselor, I have eight years of experience helping youth and adults recovering from addictions, trauma, anxiety, depression, and other mental health conditions in both individuals and families. Prior to becoming a therapist, I studied Scientific Inquiry and completed my bachelors thesis in neuroscience, studying signals in the brain that affect eating and other behaviors. I worked in the natural health industry as a Research Scientist and educator. As part of this experience, I have studied cultural diversity and the use of holistic health approaches for over 30 years. I believe each individual has the ability to affect positive change in their own well-being with the right support, environment and evidence-based interventions. My motto is “Kindness Matters”. I have found client-centered “talk” therapy to be effective in building a therapeutic relationship of trust that fosters self exploration, confidence and motivation. My role is not to give advice or judgment, but to help you make choices based on your own knowledge and values. For some, this may involve therapies such as Cognitive or Dialectical Behavioral Therapies (CBT/DBT) Narrative Therapy, or Brief Solution-Focused Therapy, among others. I use assessment interviews periodically to identify your strengths and learn about your ongoing needs to make sure we are meeting your goals. Ethics are paramount in my practice. Education, advocacy and resources are essential to counseling and I am an active member of The Texas Counseling Association. If I don’t have an answer, I will find it. Previous patients have called me “warm, caring, funny, relatable, helpful, professional, and thoughtful”. I hope you will find the same!

When imagining my ideal client, I see individuals from diverse backgrounds—LGBTQ+ youth navigating identity and acceptance, juveniles facing emotional and behavioral challenges during critical developmental years, adults striving for personal growth or healing from past trauma, and men working to overcome stigma around mental health and express vulnerability. Each client brings a unique set of needs: the need to be heard without judgment, to feel safe in their identity, to rebuild trust, and to move toward a more empowered and authentic self. My approach is grounded in existential-phenomenological psychology, which means I focus on understanding each person’s unique lived experience—how they make meaning, face uncertainty, and navigate questions of identity, purpose, and connection. Alongside this foundation, I integrate evidence-based practices like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I tailor my approach to meet the needs of each client—whether that’s a teen struggling with identity, an adult working through anxiety or life transitions, someone processing trauma, or a man learning to express emotion in a safe and healthy way.

I believe that people do not struggle in isolation. Their challenges are often shaped by relationships, life experiences, opportunities, barriers, and the environments in which they live and work. My role is to help clients better understand those influences, identify their strengths, and develop practical strategies that support meaningful and lasting change. I have practiced as a licensed professional counselor since 2014 and bring experience from the public, nonprofit, higher education, and corporate sectors. I strive to provide a supportive, unbiased, and nonjudgmental environment where clients can openly explore their thoughts and feelings, better understand the challenges they face, and identify steps toward achieving their goals. Throughout my career, I have worked with individuals navigating transitions, uncertainty, education, careers, public systems, and other life challenges. My counseling approach is grounded in humanistic principles and emphasizes empathy, collaboration, and respect for each client’s unique experiences. I strive to be practical, goal-oriented, and solution-focused while remaining flexible and responsive to each client’s needs. I view counseling as a collaborative process in which we work together to build insight, identify strengths, and create a path forward that reflects your values and goals.

My approach to therapy is centered around building relationships. The most important thing you need to know is that you are not alone; that there is hope and that you have everything you need within yourself to get better. When you choose therapy with me, it will be more of a conversation than me “analyzing” you as a client. It will be a safe space where you will not feel judged, and a place where you feel validated but also challenged to reevaluate your thought processes and actions. If you're ready to embark on a journey of self-discovery and personal growth, I invite you to reach out to me today. Together, we can unlock your inner strength, embrace new possibilities, and pave the way for a brighter future.
