Susan Van Wazer
Hello and Welcome! I am really looking forward to getting started with you. It can take a big step to make that initial contact for some guidance and help. My name is Sue. I've been a therapist for over 30 years and use a family systems theoretical approach when helping others through the issues and how those issues developed. I also use Cognitive behavioral therapy to guide people on making the changes that they want to see in their lives. Often it's the patterns that we aren't aware of that have an underlying pull to keep us where we are or keep us from making changes. I also help people who have survived traumatic childhood experiences that still haunt or effect one's life that can feel debilitating. Throughout my tenure as a therapist I have worked in many capacities, including developing programs, supervising therapists, running the administrative aspects of programs, such as grants, events, etc. I have lived in several places within this country from large metropolis to small town communities. I work with LGBQ, youth and young people, families, couples, career issues, persons seeking major change, persons seeing recovery from psychological trauma, depression, anxiety, and more. I'm looking forward to working with you! Talk to you soon! Sue

Welcome. If you new to therapy or have done therapy before, connecting with the right therapist can be a very essential piece in your personal journey. At BetterHelp, I am one of the many therapists who are here to help. Are you having trouble adjusting to current challenges in your life? Has the stress of the global pandemic in the recent past made coping a lot harder? Sometimes unexpected events or circumstances make life very difficult. As a therapist, I provide a confidential and non-judgmental place to assist you in finding balance back into your life. I help you achieve personalized goals in counseling utilizing a variety of evidenced based techniques such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). I listen and assist you in exploring new and effective ways to face those challenges and learn/apply the skills to manage your emotional concerns. My work at non-profit organizations, Catholic Charities, and college counseling centers in Kansas and Missouri have provided me with the foundation to help in a variety of areas such as stress, anxiety, depression and relationship concerns . I believe that everyone has the potential to achieve the most out of life once they discover how. I have a bicultural background (South American family of origin & born in the US) and am a bilingual (Spanish & English) therapist. My background along with over 15 years of experience in personal counseling give me the ability to understand and help many. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of Missouri as well as a Board Certified TeleMental Health Provider(BC-TMH) . I'm glad you are here seeking therapy for yourself. I look forward to working together.

I began my addictions counseling career six years after entering recovery from alcohol/drug use, on 5/13/1982. My original counseling schooling was in Rational Emotive Therapy, which evolved into Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and led to my schooling in Narrative Therapy and Transactional Analysis. Most recently, I have become interested in Miller & Rollnick's Motivational Interviewing, Prochaska & Diclemente's Stages of Change model of behavior change, Berg & Miller's Solution-Focused Therapy, Marlatt & Donovan's relapse prevention strategies and techniques, ACT therapy, and Internal Family Systems therapy. My most recent Certification is in Robin Shapiro's Eye Movement and Desensitization Reprocessing-EMDR-, through the EMDRIA International Institute in November of 2021. As a Therapist, I necessarily became conversant in telehealth methodology during the recent COVID-19 pandemic. I approach counseling holistically: I understand individuals as "whole cloth", i.e., as the current product(s) of their total life experiences. I also firmly believe in all-ways maintaining a positively enthusiastic outlook on life and living!
